Yawkey Way is renamed Jersey Street.

Boston Public Improvement Commission approves the petition by current Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, who had said that he was “haunted” by the legacy of his predecessor’s failure to sign an African-American player until 1959. Critics of the change point out out that, to date, the Yawkey Foundation had contributed some $300 million to health, youth, and other programs in the Boston area.
